How does your garden grow? Part 12: Update on the wintered over Geraniums.

Look at my babies! See how they have grown?! :) I wanted to show you how great sticking them down the basement all winter works. They seriously look dead and then ta da! Now they are thriving. Pretty soon they will have loads of blossoms. The one on the left has white blooms already. Want to see the before picture?

I didn't take a picture of my begonia (number 1 pot) as it is being a little shy this year. He'll come out of his shell in no time. Isn't this cool? It saves me lots of money each summer. You should try this too. Learn how here.

Piggly Wiggly deals 5/26 - 6/1.

I have no idea why this didn't post this weekend while I was away. So sorry! I had two posts scheduled and they both didn't post. Hmm.

These prices apply to Piggly Wiggly stores in the Midwest. See if your store is included here. Don't forget to print out your Online Exclusive Coupons. This week's coupons (for my area) are for $1.49, 13-14.4 oz. package Food Club Graham Crackers or $0.49 10 oz. Food Club Marshmallows. You can use this coupon when you spend $10. Since these are Pig coupons you can stack them with mfr. coupons too. My Piggly Wiggly accepts IP (Internet Print) coupons up to $2.50. Yours may vary.

Piggly Wiggly is having a huge Kraft promotion going on right now. Too bad we can't pair the Kraft coupons with mfr. coupons. It looks like they are in store coupons, but rumor has it they aren't. You can try, But my guess is that it won't work. So plan accordingly. The sales are good enough without stacking, though, so I'm happy.

Rhubarb Soda recipe.

I love to cook and I love to share some of my favorite reipes. This one is such a yummy one and it's so darn pretty. Just add this syrup to some sparkling water and you are all set. I bet you could either reduce (boil down) this into a sauce and add to just about anything. Or add some alcohol to make an adult drink. OMG I am thinking Rhubarb Cosmo or a Rhutini lol. I love the name Rhutini!!! This recipe is from Carrie Floyd over at the Culinate Kitchen. Here ya go. :) Enjoy!

Rhubarb Soda
by Carrie Floyd

Serves 6 to 8

Prep Time 5 minutes

Cook Time 15 minutes

Introduction

Recently my greed at the farmers’ market prompted me to buy more rhubarb than I had time to fashion into tarts or pie. Instead I turned the stalks into syrup, which I then made into cocktails and sodas.

Ingredients

1½ cups rhubarb, roughly chopped

1 cup sugar

1½ cups water

~ Sparkling water

~ Ice

Steps

1.Place rhubarb, sugar, and 1½ cups of water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then turn down to a simmer. Cook for about 15 minutes, until the syrup is bright pink.

2.Turn off the heat and allow to cool. Strain syrup into a large jar.

3.To make each soda, measure ¼ cup rhubarb syrup into a glass. Add enough sparkling water to fill the glass ⅔ full. Stir to mix, then add ice.

I am making some of this today to take on our little vacation this weekend. Happy Holidays!

Once Upon A Child Clearance Blowout.

Once Upon A Child is having a big sale June 5. Here's the details:

One Day Only! Save more by the hour, on selected spring & Summer clothing.* The longer you shop the more you save!

From 9:00am - 3:00pm - Save 50% OFF
From 3:01pm - 6:00pm - Save 60% OFF
From 6:01pm - 9:00pm - Save 70% OFF

These sales usually only apply to red tag merchandise. Red tag means it's on markdown. Markdown means they want it moved out of their store and into your home. They are sneaky about the wording. I found this out the hard way a couple of years ago. Ask when you get there what merchandise is really on sale. It could be red tag. It could be green. It could be everything.....yeh right. Wishful thinking.

*Valid at participating store(s) only. Green Bay and Appleton Offer may not be used in conjunction with any other discount, sale, offer, or benefit. Not applicable to prior purchases or gift cards/certificates. All sales final.

How does your garden grow? Part 11: Rhubarb.

When I think Rhubarb I think of my great grandmother. She always grew this old fashioned plant in her backyard. I bet a lot of you are reminded of the women in your family when you think Rhubarb. It brings good memories of pies, jams and crisps.

Rhubarb is actually a perennial vegetable, but has been deemed a fruit for ages. It has been used for centuries for it's medicinal qualities, but I can only share with you recipes from my kitchen usually involving strawberries and a lot of sugar.  The part of the Rhubarb that is consumed is the stalk. You can see this in the picture I snapped this evening (see above). Isn't it a pretty sight? I love the rosy reds and green. Rhubarb reminds me of celery. It's kind of stringy, crunchy and it can be green. It's very versatile. You can freeze it, can it, bake it or even boil it down. I have even heard of punches and syrups being made from Rhubarb. I have only made jam and crisps. I can't wait to try many new recipes.

Here is one of my favorite recipes.

Rhubarb Crunch
•2 cups flour

•1 cup rolled oat

•1 1/2 cups brown sugar

•1/4 teaspoon salt

•1 cup butter

•6 cups diced rhubarb

•1 teaspoon cinnamon

•1 1/2 cups sugar

•4 tablespoons cornstarch

•1/2 cup water

•1 teaspoon vanilla

•1/2 teaspoon red food coloring

Preheat oven to 400; grease 11x7x1 1/2" baking dish.

In mixing bowl combine flour, oats, brown sugar and salt.

Cut in butter until mixture resembles fine crumbs; reserve 1 cup crumbs; press remaining crumbs into baking dish.

Arrange rhubarb on crumbs.

In small saucepan combine cinnamon, sugar and cornstarch; stir in water; cook over medium heat stirring constantly until thickened.

Remove from heat; stir in vanilla and food coloring.

Pour on rhubarb; sprinkle with reserved crumbs.

Bake in preheated oven for 10 minutes; turn temperature to 325; bake for 40 minutes longer.

Enjoy!

Target recalls 350,000 woven storage trunks.

Target recalled 350, 000 woven storage trunks yesterday because one severely injured an 18 month old little girl. She suffered brain damage when the lid pinned her neck against the edge of the trunk. A few other children were injured according to reports.

The trunks were sold online and in stores from February 2009 through April 2010. Because these chests weren't considered to be used for children they didn't need to meet safety guidelines like those in place for toy chests.

The CPSC is advising concerned people to return the chest to Target for a refund or exchange. You can read more here.

Kraft First Taste....check your offers again. It may be there this time!

Go back and check your Kraft First Taste account because there is a good chance that your offer is really there this time. I thought that maybe because their site was getting a lot of traffic their server was down. Then when I could get into my account it said there were no more offers to be had. All out. Then a couple days later it said I had no new offers. Well, ladies and gents....yesterday I got an email telling me that I had a new offer. Yay! It was the one I was hoping for:

Free package of KOOL-AID Fun Fizz Drink Drops (up to $2.49)

Free package of OSCAR MAYER Deli Fresh Shaved Meats (up to $4.50)

Free package of RITZ CRACKERFULS Filled Crackers (up to $3.49)

Free package of KRAFT 100 CALORIE PACKS CHEESE BITES (up to $3.29)

Free package of KRAFT HOMESTYLE DELUXE Macaroni & Cheese Dinner (up to $3.99)

Free package of DIGIORNO® Deep Dish Pizza (up to $3.30)

I am super excited. If I get all of these coupons I will send Kraft a love letter. Really. LOL. Maybe. Not a Kraft First Taste member? Not even sure what Kraft First Taste is???? You can read more here.

This week's shopping highlights.

I didn't do Double Daze last week as I was super busy and my baby was really sick. Living off the stockpile is always a good thing. That's why it's called a stockpile, right? :) I did hit up Piggly Wiggly because it's a hop, skip and a jump away. Here's the details:

Orv's pizza for $0.99.
3.5 lb. Chuck Roast for $5.79.
Natural Hunt's Ketchup (24 oz.) FREE.
6 Skippy peanut butter $0.70 each.
4 Wish Bone dressings $0.50 each.
Corn on the cob for $0.28 each. Wasn't the best corn.
Two 2 lb. bag of fries $0.99 each.
Sara Lee bread $1.04
5 Food Club chunk cheeses $1.25 each. I shred my own. It makes for much better melted cheese minus the ingredients to prevent caking. And in an 8 oz. chunk you get more than 2 cups shredded like you do in the bags.

Wednesday starts a new week of shopping and it looks like Piggly Wiggly is having an awesome week so stay tuned! I don't get to say that too often. Oops, did I just say that?! Just being honest about shopping their loss leaders. Happy saving everyone!

$1 flip flops at Old Navy this Saturday.

Stop by your local Old Navy this Saturday the 22 of May. They will be selling their flip flops for $1 each. That's a better deal than my local dollar store will give me! A little birdy told me that if you don't want to be stressed out by the crowds (have you ever tried to go into an Old Navy when they are having one of their amazing sales?! OMG!!) you can purchase your flip flops now and then bring in your receipt the day of the sale and they will adjust the price and give you the difference. Now, I have not tried this so do so at your own risk. It's just a nice thought knowing you won't have to wrassle anyone to get that periwinkle pair you just have to have. There is a limit of 5 per customer. Just throwing that out there. I'm not a flip flop kind of gal so I'm not sure yet if this is a deal for me, but since I see everyone and their sister wearing flip flops I had you in mind.. :)

How does your garden grow? Part 10: Winter Sowing update.

Oh am I excited that it is supposed to be in the 70s all week. I am more than getting the bug to put my plants in the ground. Soon! My husband tilled the garden plot this weekend. My makeshift compost pile was worked into the soil also. I wanted to update you on the progress of my Winter Sowing. Look at my babies grow. :) Oh I am a proud mama. Hee hee.

If you look closely at my picture above, it's a portion of my Winter Sown seedlings. Actually, they are a little past seedlings and almost full fledged plants. Clockwise from the top, starting with Mr. Diet Squirt Bottle, the bush beans. All of their leaves are turned over because they were getting too big inside the 2L bottle. They are about 6" tall. Next up is a teeny tiny little tomato plant (not sure if it's an Heirloom Beefsteak or a Brandywine). This guy isn't really a Winter Sown. He's a wannabe. He's actually so embarrassed that he's hiding under a leaf from his much larger brother in the white vinegar jug. He's in the picture to show you how much better my Winter Sown did compared to my indoor guys. Isn't that amazing?! And onto the vinegar jug (bottom of picture). The tomato plants in the vinegar jug are the same ones that I snapped a picture of the first time I talked about Winter Sowing. They are much larger now. See the difference....?!

I am definitely going to do 99% of my seeds Winter Sown style next winter. This was awesome. I am so happy that I read the post that day over at the Sparta Savings blog. She gave me the idea to dig deeper into this. I can't blame her for my compulsion to have to know every little deatil about projects I start. Sorry, that's another post on another day. I hope your gardening is going great. I'd love to see what you have going on in your gardens!

This week's shopping highlights.

I did my first Saturday Double Daze at PNS. It felt weird, but good at the same time. Brought out a little uneasiness for different reasons. I always feel a little anxiety when I check out. I'm not sure why. I always think that even though I have my transactions planned out to the T that I still goofed up somewhere.  So a Saturday Double Daze brought these fears out again. Since I know Saturdays at any store are a zoo. I was a tad worried. I didn't do two transactions as I felt I was spending enough $ in the first one.
Here's what I got at PNS:
- BIC razors for $0.50 (used $3/1 Q).
- 2 Sea Pak shrimp $5.98 (used 2 $1/1 doubled Q).
- Oscar Mayer Light Bologna was better than free (used in ad Q + $2/1 Q).
- Motts Apple Juice $0.98 (used in ad Q).
- Rinaldi pasta sauce $0.98 (used in ad Q).
- 2 Classico pasta sauces $1.61 (used a BOGO Q).
- 3 Kraft Meltdowns were better than free (used 3 $1/1 doubled Q).
- 1 loaf Roundy's bread $1.
- 2 gallons Roundy's milk (whole and skim) $4.27.
- 1 seedless cuke $1.
- 4 cans tomato paste $1.88
- $0.10 reusable bag credit.
Total spent: $16.64. Total saved: $37.19  %70 savings. Not bad at all.

Piggly Wiggly:
I had to make up a party platter with dip so I spent more than usual, but it's almost summer and this is going to be happening more and more. The best deal I got was for the pineapple $1.49, but I see at Aldi's this week that they are only $0.99!

Save A Lot:
I just picked up some cheese sticks for the hubby :) $1.29 and bananas $0.33/lb.

Walgreens:
I just stopped in to pick up my free 8x10 collage. We gave it as a Mother's Day gift in a a frame. Did you get one too? I love taking advantage of deals like that.

Well, today starts a new shopping week for me, but I think I'm going to hit up PNS on Saturday because my little guy is sick sick sick, but we'll see. And I have to scope out the Pig and SAL flyer. Hope you had an amazing week of deals!

Happy Mother's Day!

Happy Mother's Day to all you wonderful women out there who know exactly where the scotch tape is at all times. Where the kids' shoes were last seen. What time and day the fieldtrip is. How to turn a blanket into a living room fort. How to braid better than you know who. How to make a meal out of a loaf of bread and a bottle of ketchup. Who can visualize every item's location in the fridge and explain in great detail how to find it from the other room. And just how to make it all better. Give yourself a big high five. I will not be posting today unless I feel like it. :) It's my day and I'm going to milk it.

This week's shopping highlights.

I didn't do much shopping this week. I didn't go to my usual Double Daze. I did go to Piggly Wiggly a couple times. I bought:

- 3 packs of Old El Paso taco seasoning. It was buy 3 and receive $1 OYNO of chicken or beef. So I paid $2.01 and received the $1 Catalina. Too bad I didn't have the Old El Paso coupons with me. My Internet was being all goofy yesterday.
- 3 packs of Kraft shredded cheese 8 oz. bag on markdown for $0.99 each.
- 1 ten pound bag of potatoes for $0.99.
- Gerber Graduates sides were on markdown  for $0.69. I grabbed two.

That's all folks. I see a few good deals at Pig this week and PNS. I am super excited that PNS/Copps is having Double Daze twice a week through the summer. I am going to go Saturday instead of today. I also want to note that I shop at the Little Chute Piggly Wiggly so if you aren't seeing the markdowns maybe this is why. I should have noted this sooner.  Happy shopping!

How does your garden gorw? Part 9: Composting.

I am almost a hippie. There I said it. I mean I wear deodorant and and a bra, but I am seriously almost a hippie. Ask my family, friends and especially my husband. I thought it was rude to be called this at first. Then it turned into being funny and to be honest....now I totally own that word. Ha ha. No, really. For instance I have been unsuccessfully trying to have a compost pile for a couple of years now. Want a chuckle? Keep reading.

First off, composting is awesome. Tons and tons of garbage that goes to the landfill every week could be composted. Veggie and fruit peelings, pits, seeds, etc. You can dump in your coffee grounds and eggshells. I just wouldn't add animal products like meat, bones, feces, and the like. Just remember greens and browns. Greens being the produce and lawn clippings. Browns being leaves, dirt, straw, woodchips and sticks/twigs. Your pile needs some moisture too. It should feel like a damp, wrung out sponge. The bacteria and insects feed on the food (scraps) you give it. It's ready when it's dark brown and earthy. If you garden adding compost is a must. Your garden will thrive from all of the natural nutrients. You can buy fancy composting bins, but they are pricey. You can start a pile almost anywhere outside. You can even buy a worm composter (called vermicomposting) and they eat the scraps and their poo is the compost. Nice, eh? Whichever route you want to take doesn't matter. If we can reduce what goes to the landfill that's all that should matter.

I know I can totally do this, but I am more worried what others think. In order for it to work it either needs to concealed or ugly. Ugly is cheaper so I went the ugly route. Well, actually I went the sorta concealed route at first. I tried to use an extra garbage can we had. I was really excited because I thought I was so smart. A compost pile needs to be turned or it doesn't decompose everything. It would just break down the stuff in the middle. It would eventually break it all down, but I don't have years to wait for this to happen. Well turning this huge garbage can was quite a conundrum. I decided that bungee cords would help keep the lid on so I didn't lose all of the contents. Nope. My next idea was to dump the contents into our wheelbarrow and stir it and then put it back. Um, yeh gross. What was I thinking?! And I'm pretty sure the neighbors were watching me do this. My back yard isn't private. It faces other back yards so there's nowhere to hide. There are no fences and we don't have a shed or I would put my pile there. So no matter what we do everybody sees it. You are probably thinking who cares if they see you dump your garbage out in your yard. We just so happen to have a deer problem. I feel like people think I am baiting them or something.

Fast forward to today. I have my 'compost pile' on one side of my garden plot. I wait until it is dark to go dump my gobbly gook out there. I don't turn it enough because I feel like there are a million eyes on me. I shouldn't feel silly doing such things in my own yard. I just worry too much what other's think. Maybe part of it is that I think they might be laughing at me or worse putting me down for this. I am trying to make the world a better place and some people just don't see it that way. My other half thinks I am pretty goofy about this stuff. He hates that I hang socks and jeans out to dry so they get crunchy (to get off the subject) and that I'm trying to compost. He thinks I recycle too many things. It bugs him that I have the county recycling lady in my email contacts (because I have an endless amount of rights and wrongs to ask her and we are trying to get Recycle Bank off the ground in my area.) Now that I got that off my chest, do you compost or know people who do?  Any input would be much appreciated. I really want to hear from all you hippies out there. Ha!
