Toys/Babies R Us members only sale. TODAY ONLY!

Are you a member of the Toys/Babies R Us Rewards program? Well, today only they are having a members only shopping event. There is a great deal on jars of Earth's Best baby food. If you need to sign up you can do so here. This will allow you to print a temporary card to use until your real ones arrive in the mail. They are just like any other club cards. You get a big one to stick in your wallet and a couple for key chains.

You can get 20 jars for $10 for 1st and 2nd foods. You can get third foods 10 jars for $10. Just click on the links to print your coupons. You must buy twenty 1st/2nd or ten 3rd foods. The awesome part about Toys/Babies R Us is that you can stack their store coupons with mfr. coupons. Here are some ideas for coupons to stack:

- If you buy any other the Earth's Best infant cereals the back always has a coupon you can cut off the box. I have one in front of me for $1 off 10. You could use two of these to get your 1st/2nd foods for $0.40! That's an awesome deal for organic baby food in my honest opinion. I was buying the organic store brand for $0.50 on sale. Even if you used it for the 3rd foods it comes out to be  $0.90 each.

- $1 off seven jars of baby food here. Print two and your baby food will be $0.40 each for the 1st/2nd foods and $0.90 for the 3rd foods. Limit 3 prints.

-$1 off 6 in March issue of American Baby. Expires 7/31 so this is perfect timing.

Another noteworthy deal for members only is the Crane Cow or Frog Humidifiers are 50% off with members only coupon. Also The Exergen Temporal Artery Thermometer is 50% off with members only coupon. I have sooo wanted one of those Exergen thermometers. Not too sure where's you find coupons for either one of these.

Thanks for the heads up Your Green Helper!

My Target run.

Lookie lookie. I got all this stuff for $11.88 last night. I bought 13 items so it evens out that each item was less than $1. That makes me a happy girl. I suggest playing the SoBe Heads or Tails game everyday. Every time I play I get a BOGO coupon or a FREE coupon. I stacked Target coupons and Mfr. coupons for the Wonka candy bar to be $0.29 and both SoBe were FREE. I used a Target IP coupons for the Chef Boyardee to make it FREE.. I used only a Mfr. coupon for the Bounty to make it FREE. The rest were on clearance. All the little girl shorts were $1 (go get some there are lots there!) or $0.75. Make sure you wonder around the whole toddler section as they were in different places. Those adorable little open toed baby girl Louboutins....okay, they aren't Louboutins....were $1.98! Only have NB size left. These were found by the cribs. The little blue summer cover up/dress was $2.48. The Solar Powered blue toddler shirt (my personal favorite) was $1! The red toddler boy shorts were $0.75! Those are rummage sale prices people. RUMMAGE....SALE.....PRICES! The Market Pantry choco covered raisins are for a watermelon cake I am making this weekend. Pics to follow if I remember. They weren't on sale, but I needed them. Yeh that's right. I buy things not on sale. Sometimes. And it hurts. A lot. Ha! I used a reusable bag so I got a $0.05 discount. I did notice that this time I did not get any overage which is fine with me, but it's so up in the air. Sometimes I get it and sometimes I don't. Maybe their new system is programmed not to now. Hay Chihuahua.

Other noteables that may even make me go back:

Michael Graves Baby food/milk travel case-$1.99 (was $4.99).
Toddler Boys sandals-$6.58. I bet they will go lower in weeks to come.
Mossimo summer dresses-$10.50 (was $15). I bet they will go lower in weeks to come.
Annies Bunny Grahams-$2.35 (substitution for out of stock Ritz Crackerfuls, but yet they were on the self.).
Burt's Bees Tothpaste plus bonus lip balm-$3.99.
Gerber Graduates Yogurt Blends Try Me Free peelies on package.
Earth's Best baby food-$0.69.

I hope this benefits you better than me rangling up receipts from the prior week and telling you my bargains. They are useless to you once the sales are over. I'm not sure which way I'll go on this, but maybe it'll be a little of this and a little of that. I'm indecisive ya know. Feel free to share your deals and steals.

McDonald's peelies for FREE Smoothie or Frappe!

Free small (12 oz.) Smoothie or Frappe peelies on large sodas. They happen to be $1 in my neck of the woods. I haven't tried the Smoothies, but dang those Frappes are good. I had a bunch of free Frappe coupons a while back and gave a few away (I believe in karma!) and used every last one that I had. Mmm! Are you guys seeing these? I sure hope so.

Stovetop popcorn recipe!

One of my fond childhood memories is eating freshly made popcorn. And not that garbage out of a bag. I am no popcorn snob, but popcorn out of a bag is like ham out of a can to me. No offense to either, but sometimes I just want real tasting popcorn. I do keep microwave popcorn in my home on occasion so please recycle that hate mail you are about to send. And it's that kind that leaves your mouth feeling liked you just ate a tub of Crisco. I know you know what I am talking about.  What can I say? I am a butter lover.

When we made popcorn as kids it was in a Stir Crazy popper. You know those black, domed poppers that melted the butter on top and then you turned it over and ate it out of the big dome. It was sooo good. Those days are long gone and so is that popper. I have an air popper, but that just isn't the same. As one person put it.....they'd rather snack on packing peanuts. Hmm. I love that homemade popcorn is a frugal option too. I wait until I find popping corn on major sale and then freeze it. Here is a recipe that is as close to Stir Crazy (or fill in your favorite childhood popcorn memory) as it gets.

Stovetop Popcorn (adapted a teensy bit from Simply Recipes. Go have a looksy here.)

Go get it:

1/2 cup popping corn
3 or 4 tablespoons coconut oil (Any high smoke point oil such as canola, peanut or grape seed works well.)
toppings of your choice

Go make it:

Add your oil to a heavy bottomed 3 quart or larger pan. You will need to cover it later too so go ahead and dig out the cover. Heat on medium high heat. Add salt to the oil if you are planning on adding it later as a topping. Trust me now or never. Add a couple of kernels of corn to the oil. Cover pan and wait until the kernels have started popping (Or better yet until they are done popping or they may fly across your kitchen!) and then add the rest of the popping corn. Make sure the cover is put back on. As soon as the popping corn starts doing what it's supposed to shake it like your life depended on it. No kidding. Now if you are able....tip the lid so the steam escapes. This will ensure crunchy popcorn. Now you may want to don oven mits or shake at your own risk. When popping has slowed down to every couple of seconds remove from heat. Now is a good time to add your butter if you so desire. The hot pan will melt it perfectly. Did I tell you to stop shaking? Keep going! Okay, before your arms break off you can go grab a big spoon or spatula and stir it the rest of the way. This is so your butter gets evenly adhered. Now add your salt....wait a minute. Aren't you paying any attention?! You already added your salt. The best part is if you waited too long normally your salt won't stick.....well we don't have that problem do we? See if you put it in the oil it is being perfectly placed on your popcorn as it is cooked and then violently shaken. Some other fun toppings are:

- Butter of course
- Seasoned Salt
- Fresh ground black pepper
- Sea Salt
- Brown sugar or plain jane cane sugar (think Kettle Corn)
- Tobasco
- Chili Powder
- Any other fun suggestions?

Office Depot: 12 notebooks for $1.00!

If you head on over to Office Depot's website you can get some pretty cheap wire bound notebooks. They have 6 packs for $0.50. Limit 2. You can pick between college rule and wide rule. To get this awesome deal select in store pick up when adding the notebooks to your cart. I hope my picture down there isn't too hard to read. Basically the notebooks were $3 each and it deducted $5 plus free in store pick up. Add sales tax. I haven't been school supply bargain hunting so you let me know if this isn't a great deal.

Seventh Generation strikes a deal with Walmart. Hmm.

I found this news very interesting. I'm not a huge Walmart shopper. I don't avoid the store, but I don't make a point to go there unless I will be in the area. I would say that Walmart and I are not on the same page. We stand for different things. We hang out with different people. Capisce?

I read in the Wall Street Journal that Seventh Generation will make the move starting in August and be fully on Walmart's shelves by September. The crazy part is co-founder Jeffery Hollender swore that "hell would freeze over" before he would partner with a store like Walmart. That's where the Hmm in my title comes from. He has now changed his tune. “At this point, we now believe that we can have a bigger impact by partnering with Walmart than by shunning it,” said Hollender.

I am wondering how the prcies will compare and what they will all carry. I read that general purpose cleaners will be put out first and  then baby items and other types of cleaners will follow. I hope this is a step in the right direction for Walmart and not two steps back for Seventh Generation.

How does your garden grow? Part 19: Creamy Cucumber recipe.

It's cucumber time! Are your cukes ready? I've got all shapes and sizes. As you can see from the picture above. :) I love to eat cukes fresh out of the garden. Usually in a salad or plain with salt and pepper. Sometimes I run out of ideas. Today I am going to share with you a recipe that makes a great side dish for a BBQ or any summer dinner.

Creamy Cucumbers

Go get it:

3-5 medium or small cucumbers
2 Tablespoon sugar (or more to taste)
1 teaspoon salt (or more to taste)
White vinegar
1/2 teaspoon dried dill (fresh works too if you have it on hand)
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 cup sour cream
onion (optional)

Go make it:

Slice cucumbers very thin. I used a mandolione. Works like a charm. Just don't slice your fingers.

Place in a bowl and sprinkle sugar and salt over top. Mix well. Add enough vinegar to cover them. Let sit for 15 to 20 minutes.
Now drain all of the vinegar off. Make sure you get every last drop or your creamy cucumbers will be soupy. Add sour cream, onion, pepper and dill. Mix well. Refrigerate until well chilled.
Enjoy!

Please don't leave children and pets in hot vehicles.

The other day I saw a woman leave a child in the car and run into the gas station to pay. We've all been in her shoes. The child is sleeping and it was only for a second. I'm pretty sure she could see the child while paying. What would you have done? I don't think it was the worst decision she has ever made by a long shot. It got me thinking, though. How hot is it in the car in the middle of summer? You are always hearing about stories of pets and children dying from the temperatures. The lady could have run into an old friend and struck up a conversation that lasted longer than she had intended. These things happen. I don't keep a thermometer in my car. Do you? I know that the seats would burn the back of my legs when we had leather in our last vehicle. So I know it's hot. How hot is too hot? Find out some very helpful information here and here.

Did you know that all that it takes is 10 minutes in a car and the temperature can jump almost 20 degrees. That's scary stuff right there. The temperature keeps climbing too. Even in the shade a car can be well over 120 degrees. There's no sense in cracking a window either. A car acts like a greenhouse. That's why it feels so much hotter inside than it may actually be outside. Pets are especially at risk because they can only reduce their body temperature by panting and through the pads on the paws. Look for these symptoms from your pets if you think they have a heat related illness:

-Excessive panting

-Excessive drooling
-Increased heart rate
-Trouble breathing
-Disorientation
-Collapse or loss of consciousness
-Seizure
-Respiratory arrest
If you see any of these signs seek medical treatment as soon as possible.
Children and infants body temperature rises faster due to their small size. This is very dangerous in summer months. Almost 40 children die each year from hyperthermia. Some people believe the rate of deaths went up when it became mandatory to put your infant in a rear facing carrier in the back seat. Out of sight out of mind. Some blame lack of sleep in the early months. July is the deadliest month according to the Associated Press. Less than 10% of all cases involve any sort of drugs or alcohol. These cases are happening to the most loving and capable parents. Most of the time it is a change in routine that cause these cases. Some cases involved children crawling into cars and trunks while playing. There is a great short video put out by Safe Kids USA that you should watch. Some tips on remembering to keep your child safe:

-Keep vehicles locked so children do not enter while playing and teach them not to play inside vehicles.
-Keep your purse/gym bag/briefcase/cell phone/etc. in the back seat so you see child/infant.
-Keep a reminder in the front seat (teddy, toy, sippy cup, diaper bag, etc.)
-Create a policy with your day care provider or school if child does not show up that there is a list of people to contact in order to make sure child is in a safe place.
-If you see an unattended child in a hot car call 911 or go inside and have them make an announcement.

Please have a safe summer with your pets and children. If you would like more info you can go here or any of the links I have above.

Sometimes even with the best intentions our gardens don't do what we want them to. For example I thought I was growing bush style beans and grew pole style beans. Hmm. Not sure there. How does your garden grow? Part 17: Freezing corn from the cob.

Oh man it's corn time! We just had some amazing corn this weekend. The kind of amazing I'd like to taste in...say...February. I have not ever had a can of corn taste like fresh off the cob. I also have not ever had any frozen corn taste great either. Corn on the cob is a staple of summer and I can happily say it's a staple of winter now too. I have an easy recipe for freezing corn on the cob. Actually, it's going to be off the cob, but I like saying corn on the cob better. It just flows off your tongue better than corn off the cob. Okay? Okay. This recipe is even easier if you grab your friend or family member to help. It's usually a pretty easy bribe when they can take some corn home with them. They'll thank you come February.

Go get it:
- Corn. Lots of corn. I usually go with 4 dozen. You want to make this worth your time.
- 1 to 1 1/2 cups sugar
- Water
- Large cookie sheet(s)
- Large cake pan
- Knife or electric knife
- Biggest stock pot you have.
- Freezer zip top bags. I like quart size. This is a perfect amount to pull out of the freezer for a family of 4.
Go make it:
1. Clean up your corn. Using a soft bristled scrub brush will remove any little silk that is hard to get rid of by hand. You can also use paper towel, but I am more for the eco-friendly brush. Remove the stalk.
2. Remove kernals from the cob by standing the ear of corn in the cake pan or cookie sheet and running the knife from top to bottom. I usually get this done in 4 rows and then go back and get what I missed. The cake pan or cookie sheet will help catch the kernals. Do this until all of the corn is removed from the cobs.
3. Add corn kernals to your pot. Cover with water a couple inches above corn.
4. Add sugar. Give it a good stir. Bring to a boil. Boil until desired doneness is required. I generally do about five minutes. You don't want it over cooked. Remember you will be heating this again at some point and you don't want tough corn. After five minutes cool on your cookie sheet. Stirring to cool faster.
5. Once cool, scoop corn into freezer bags. I like to use a meassuring cup so I know how much is in each bag, but that's just me. Flatten the bags and try to remove as much air as possible. A little trick I use is to stick a straw into the bag and seal the bag as close to the straw as possible. Now suck out as much air as you can. Now quickly remove straw and seal the last little bit.
6. Label bags and put in your deep freeze (chest freezer) or way in the back of your refrigerator's freezer. I keep this up to six months. It might be fine longer, but I haven't ever had it last that long. :)

If you want to get all fancy you can add blanched peppers, onions or any of your other favorite veggies.  You will be so happy you have this corn on hand come Turkey Day or any fall or winter night for dinner. It is delish.
