Let me know if you use this brand. I was using Bare Minerals/Escentuals, but realized that between the price and combination of not so skin friendly ingredients I needed to make a change. Then I saw one of my blogger buddies posted about this company. And here I am. I ordered the medium and it is a tad too dark for my olive skin in the winter so I'm holding onto it for summer. I'd love to hear your experience with this company. :)

Seasonal Sunday: Angel Food Candy.

It is that time of year. Cookies and candy fill our thoughts. I can't wait to share will you some old and new favorites. Here is a classic.

Angel Food Candy

Go get it:

1 cup dark corn syrup
1 cup sugar (white or brown works, although I have not tried using brown)
1 T white vinegar
1 T baking soda
chocolate for dipping

Go make it:

Combine all ingredients except baking soda in a heavy saucepan. Over medium heat stir until sugar is dissolved. Once sugar is dissolved stop stirring. Continue cooking undisturbed until it reaches 300 degrees F. Don't worry the stinky vinegar smell goes away fast. While waiting for temperature to rise prepare a 9x13 pan by greasing or lining with parchment paper. Once it reaches 300 degrees remove from heat and add baking soda. Stir until soda is evenly mixed in. Do not over stir, though. You need to act fast as mixture cools it will harden. Pour into prepared pan. Let cool. After it is cool break into pieces. Dip pieces in melted chocolate. My favorite is dark, but you can use white or milk.

Seasonal Sunday: Being Thankful.

It is that time of year where if you don't think about it often enough, it is a good time to reflect on what you are thankful for. I think Thanksgiving has become more about who made the stuffing and will I like it or not than being appreciative and thankful.

I think we take so many things for granted. I even find myself thinking I deserve or expect certain things because I am so used to having them. How quickly we forget there are people in other countries that would give anything to be able to vote like we do. Or freely express their religious beliefs.  It is not just other countries, but people in our own neighborhood. There are homeless kids in school. Bullies.  Jobless friends and family members. I could go on and on.

Let us give thanks. I try to do this daily. It might be when I tuck my kids in bed. It might be at dinner when we say prayers. When I am missing my mom I am thankful for my health. There are so many things I am thankful for on a daily basis. I try to take a moment to just say thanks to the higher powers that be. I also try to thank the people that help make the things in my life happen. I bet your mail carriers or garbage collectors don't get much praise.

So if you have a moment during the upcoming holiday, say thanks to whoever makes your life even just a little bit better. Maybe it will be a silent thank you while you pray. Or maybe you will include a hug along with your thanks. Whatever route you go it will be appreciated. Happy holidays.

America Recyles Day today!

Did you know that recycling an aluminum beverage can rather than landfilling it saves enough energy to operate a 60W incandescent lightbulb for 4.3 hours, or to operate the equivalent compact fluorescent bulb for 20 hours.

I realize this is a little late in the day, but I still wanted to share it with you. I just pledged and so should you. Recycling is so easy and so great for the environment. Our family recycles waaaaay more than we toss in the trash. I know sometimes it isn't always so much fun having to rinse out tomato paste from the can, but it is so worth it. I even made a deal with my husband that if it involves him not wanting to rinse out something just to set it by the sink and I will take care of it. Now that is commitment folks. Kidding. He knows that it is that important to me. We are the only ones in the family who volunteer to take home the week's worth of recyclables from our family summer vacations too. The hubbs doesn't really care for that either lol. He's a trooper. So go take the pledge here. It takes 10 seconds and you don't need to give out any personal info. There is a lot of other great info there too. Have a look around. Even if you don't pledge try your hand at recycling. It just feels good. Thanks so much for the reminder Your Green Helper!

Seasonal Sunday: LED vs. incandescent Christmas lights.

Are you thinking about switching over to LED Christmas lights this year? I was, but don't think I can swing it. I have seen some really good trade in deals, but still think that I would need too many sets to be able to work that in my budget. I was really tempted. The hubbs was even more tempted.

How do you know if it is a good move to make the switch? I would say first take a step back and decide if this is more of a want or a need. For us it was both. I would like to think that I was lessening my carbon footprint by using the LED lights instead of the energy gobbling incansescent lights we are currently using. I stumbled across this article about being in the same situation.  It is VERY informative. Check it out. Second, I would say if you don't need too many sets it may be a great investment. The bulb life (hours) is is supposed to be fantastic. And third, don't forget these aren't super lights. They still break and get tangled and aren't going to hang themselves. :)

We hang a lot of lights outside and in and one of my concerns was that the new LED lights wouldn't have that warm glowy look of the old style ones I am used to. I would like to still use my current lights. I hate to get rid of things that still have life in them. I am really picky and would not like the two clashing. The author of the article says to move them around to other spots in or on your house so they aren't clashing. Somehow I don't think this would fly with me. Maybe it's not that big of a deal to you. I have heard that are some newer, more expensive brands (Phillips comes to mind) that are advertising that their lights still have that old fashioned glow. Anyone have any proof? I'd like to know what your eyes are seeing on this. I also think the white/clear look almost blue. Anyone else?

I decided that we can see what end of the season clearance brings and next year's sales. They will only get cheaper with time. As much as I believe these are a better, greener alternative I can wait. I want an electric/hybrid car, but both of our vehicles are just fine for now. I think reusing and then recycling is a much better bet than running out and buying these new lights that are oh so tempting. What say you?

HOT! $4 off coupon for Wholly Guacamole, Salsa, or Queso.

Like Wholly Guacamole on Facebook and you can print a $4/1 coupon for their salsa, guacamole or queso products until Thursday. It's a Smart Source coupon so it prints right away. I was able to print two. The coupon has been tricky to print for some so hope you don't run into any problems. I couldn't find it at first, but I was looking too hard. Once you like them on Facebook, click on the coupons tab. Click on the blue rectangular 'Click here for more info' box. A new page will open for their Homegating Headquarters. At the top of this page there will be a green box on the right hand side where you will click to print the coupon. Got all that? :)

I know my local Walmarts carry Wholly Guacamole products and so do my Pick N Save stores. At Walmart (Darboy) it was by the produce and at Pick N Save (Kimberly) it has been near the produce, but by the single serve and precut fruits/veggies. This may not be the case for your store, but just trying to help you find some. I have not tried any of the products yet, but have you? What is your favorite? Thanks for the heads up Freebies 4 Mom!

Seasonal Sunday.

Do you know the real reason leaves fall off of trees? It's not because it's cold and they just know it is fall. There's so much more to it than that.

Here in NEW there aren't too many trees that have leaves left on them. Our trees are one of the few that do. We are always the last house raking because ours drop last. I'm not sure if this is good or bad. I was reading a NPR article and learned quite a bit about the topic. Geeze, what I thought I knew.

Peter Raven, president of the Missouri Botanical Garden, explains that it is not the wind that pulls leaves from the trees, but a hormonal change that triggers a signal to sever ties. Really. The hormone change causes a cellular change involving abscission cells. These cells form at each spot where the leaf stems meet the branch. Abscission is made from the Latin ab meaning away and scindere meaning to cut. This is exactly what is does. Reminds me of the word scissors.

You cannot see any of this with the naked eye, but if you carry a microscope in your purse or backpack you may just be in luck. You would see this bumpy ridge of cells lines up getting ready to push away the leaf. The wind just happens to be in the right place at the right time.

I always wondered why the leaves couldn't just stay on the tree. I mean they would probably freeze to death, but pine trees have been doing their thing for ages and it works for them....I am no botanist and I do not play one on tv. According to the NPR article and Peter Raven, the leaves act as a kitchen staff supplying and cooking food and when work slows down in the fall they need to let the staff go. I guess if they did keep their leaves they would freeze like I thought and this would kill the tree.

Piggly Wiggly deals 11/3 - 11/9. Midwest locations.

Added a few more coupons matches shown in purple.

These prices apply to Piggly Wiggly stores in the Midwest. See if your store is included here. Don't forget to print out your Online Exclusive Coupons. This week's coupon (for my area) is for 15 oz. Food Club Pumpkin or 12 oz. Food Club Evaporated Milk or 7 oz. Food Club Flaked Coconut. You can use this coupon when you spend $10. Since this is a Pig coupon you can stack it with mfr. coupons if applicable. I am also really liking that Piggly Wiggly is participating in the EZ Pic discount program. It's like eco-friendly coupons. No need to clip. No card to load them onto. If you buy the qualifying amount of a product the sale price just rings up at the register. I will try to note when an item is an EZ Pic product.  My Piggly Wiggly (Larry's in Little Chute, WI) accepts IP (Internet Print) coupons up to $2.50 $2.00. They no longer accept any IP coupons that have the word FREE in the title. No BOGO (buy one get one) or just plain FREE coupons. None. Zero. Zilch. Also no % off.
