Seasonal Sunday: Time to plant those seeds outside!

Internet problems all weekend so again I am playing catch up. :(

Crazy blogger lady say what? Yup, time to plant seeds. OUTSIDE. I am not crazy. I don't think. And yes, it is time to plant your seeds outside in NE WI. Or Zone 5. Or whatever you want to call that there area outside you get your hands dirty in. That's my fave part of planting. Getting my hands all full of dirt. I've purchased many a pair of gardening gloves, but prefer the feel of the Earth on my hands and under my fingernails. Okay, maybe I am crazy....

Last year was my first attempt at Winter Sowing. Winter What?  Winter Sowing. Basically you plant your seeds in mini greenhouses made from (my other favorite part) reused containers. I like gallon milk jugs, but have used 2 L bottles and large yogurt containers. Set them out in the snow and wait for them to germinate. For real. Don't believe me? Read about my results and see actual pics here and here.

Last year I planted Organic Brandywine, Organic Bush Beans (Which turned out to be pole beans grr.), Organic Cucumbers, Organic Beefsteak and Organic Multi Colored Bell Peppers. I planted half indoors in seed trays and the other half outside. I was afraid all would fail outdoors so I had a back up plan ready. Little did I know that the only ones to fail outdoors would be the peppers and I'm not sure why. Indoors EVERYTHING failed. Everything died. I blame damping off and once it hits it's too late to fix it. When you plant everything outdoors in the first place there are way less complications because the seeds start out in their natural surroundings. There's no need to harden or even hardly water them. It's a breeze.

This year I planted pretty much the same. Used my free $25 worth of Garden's Alive products (if you haven't done so already you still have time to place an order) to get Sweet N Neat Tomatoes (a cherry variety, new to me), Organic Jalapeno, Organic Paris Island Cos Romaine Lettuce (new to me), Crimson Sweet Watermelon (new to me), Organic Chinese Sweet Pepper (similar to green bell pepper, new to me) and Delicious Tomatoes (high yield, new to me). I also planted some of my seeds that were left over from last year. Can't wait for my garden!! I will keep you updated on my Winter Sowing adventure. I'd love to swap Winter Sowing stories if you plant your seeds this way too. What are you planting this year?

Seasonal Sunday: Oh the weather outside is frightful...

Oh my. What a snowstorm. For a split second I planned on planting my seeds in preparation of winter sowing my seeds. I had a spot all ready next to my house for them. Then I saw what was headed our way. No thank ya.

So what did I do instead? Laundry, some cooking, cleaning and crib shopping. I am not a huge fan of winter so I didn't go anywhere that might require a use of the 4 wheel drive. I don't care how big my truck is. I don't like winter driving. I had a pretty bad accident a few years back so winter driving gives me panicky chest pain.

Are you ready for winter to be over? I am. Those nice warm days gave me the bug to put away all of my winter decor and pull out my swimsuits. Ha ha just kidding about the swimsuit part. My huge pregnant behind is not going near a swimsuit for a looong time. So tell me.  Is this snowy, wintery thing we have going on here your thing or not? Try to convince me to love these nice long WI winters. :) PS, I have lived in NEW most of my life so it may come as a shock that I dislike winter.

Seasonal Sunday: Green Bay Packer facts.

It's Sunday and we all know what's going down tonight. The Super Bowl just in case you live in a hole. Hee hee. My husband is actually there as I type this. GO PACK GO!!! Here are some things you may or may not have known about the Pack.

- Founded on August 11, 1919 Earl "Curly" Lambeau (hence the name Lambeau Field on which the team plays) and George Whitney Calhoun. Did you know that they were high school rivals?
- They joined the American Professional Football Association on August 27, 1921 (the precursor to the NFL).
- The Packers are the only non-profit, community-owned major league professional sports team in the United States.
-  The Packers are also the only American major-league sports franchise to release its financial balance sheet every year.
- Their name comes from the fact that Curly Lambeau's employer sponsored the team.
- The team name is the oldest name still used and unchanged.
- An impressive accomplishment is the Packers' streak of 30 consecutive home games without defeat, an NFL record. This occurred between 1929 - 1931. This record is still held to this day.
- Don Hutson's number was the first retired by the Packers in 1951. He was later entered into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963.
- A new stadium was resurrected in 1957.

Got Milk? There's more than just milk in there.

I love milk. I always have. It pairs so well with many foods. Certain ones come to mind. I have to have an ice cold glass with my Chili and it is a must with chocolate cake. I am not a dipper of cookies, but it looks like fun. Now the part that worries me is that there is more than just wholesome milk in that glass. There are unwanted hormones, antibiotics and more gross things. What happened to just milk?

There is a good reason that Canada and Europe ban all use of antibiotics and hormones in milk. These contaminants could raise the rate of certain cancers, cause early puberty and resistance to doctor prescribed antibiotics. The FDA recently raised concern about this, but got pushed into a corner by the dairy industry to stall testing. Their claim is how wasteful and costly dumping the tested milk would be. Then there could be recalls as well. Why not just test it and be done with it so we know?

Now I pretty much grew up in farm country. I didn't live on a farm, but if you drove 2 minutes out of the city there they were. Quaint barns that needed a little work with cows in the pasture. I don't have anything against dairy farmers. Some of my friend's parents were and still are dairy farmers. I'm not saying don't drink milk. I'm just raising awareness to the what ifs. That's me. I'm a worrier. I also like soy and nut milk. I worry about those too.

The least we can do is buy hormone free or organic or non-genetically modified milk. I will be honest and say I cannot afford to buy organic milk unless there is a sale. It runs at least $6 a gallon around here. For our small family we go through a lot of milk. I don't know much about about raw milk so mum's the word there. I'm all about reading labels. Don't believe commercials or what the box, can, bag or jug tells you. Read the fine print. Don't be afraid to ask questions. I'm no doctor nor farmer, but a concerned consumer.

Do you mind what's in your food or are you more concerned about how it looks and the texture, etc? This question may come off more accusing than just curious. I am not trying to be accusing. I love me some egg salad on junky white bread too. It just tastes better on that squishy, stick to the roof of your mouth white stuff. What can I say? I'm human. I know many adults and children these days are all for the latter of my question. One of my kids wants yogurt without 'chunks.' Chunks? Are you kidding me? That is called fruit. And God forbid I make homemade yogurt and put real whole frozen raspberries from our garden in that. That's beyond chunky. And real chicken on the bone gets eews and yucks from this same child. Meat is not supposed to have bones or veins according to her. Um, okay. Don't eat then. Now I can't really have that attitude so the best I can do is explain what real food is to this child.

I know I am off topic, but in my opinion many people are too obsessed with eating pretty food versus what came from our Earth. I understand not liking to think that this steak was connected to a bone at one point and was a real living animal before it got to my plate, but that is the reality. My point is the less changed food is the better. Eat and drink more real. The end. I'll get off my soap box now :)
