Latest child product recalls.

There have been quite a few recalls in the news lately. Here are a few of the latest:

7 million Fisher-Price children's tricycles recalled
Recalled: 2.9 million Fisher-Price infant toys
Recalled: 1 million Fisher-Price high chairs
Recalled: Fisher-Price Stand n' Play Rampway
Recalled: Mood rings and necklaces
Recalled: Children's hooded sweatshirts and jackets
Recalled: Sorelle "Prescott" cribs
Recalled: Children's star building sets
Chuck E. Cheese recalls more than 1 million toy rings and glasses
Recalled: Land of Nod toy vegetable sets
Recalled: Bamboo roll-up blinds from Jo-Ann Fabric
Recalled: Children's trains and boats play stations
Recalled: Baby bottle warmers sold at Williams-Sonoma

There are many more listed here. It pays to keep updated on recalls. Even if you researched until you were blue in the face and carried that darn Baby Bargains book with you at all times your stuff can still go bad.  My crib was recalled a few months ago and they sent me fire engine red plastic stoppers ( my crib is a cherry chocolate brown!) so that my drop side is stationary. Grr. I am a short 5'2 and I cannot lay my son down now. I have to give him hugs and kisses standing up and tell him to lie down. It pains me a little each time. So now I have to decide if I am going to keep my son in the crib and turn it into a toddler bed, but we are planning on expanding our family so then what? Maybe I could get rid of the bed skirt and chop off the legs by a good 4" and then it would probably be okay.....

How does your garden grow? Part 27: Apples apples apples!

I went apple picking with my dad the other day and now it is time for all things apples. Mmm. First up is my crock pot (slow cooker) apple sauce recipe.

Crock Pot Applesauce

Go get it:

15 to 20 medium sized firm apples in sweet varieties. I like Golden Delicious, Cortland, Gala, Empire and Connell Red. This ensures a nice consistency and sweetness to your sauce.

Sugar or Splenda to taste (not always needed)

cinnamon to taste

water or apple juice

Go make it:

1. If using a food mill you will not have to core or peel your apples. Just cut into chunks and place into crock pot. The food mill will catch all your seeds and stuff you aren't going to want in your sauce. A food mill will create a very smooth consistency so if chunky is your thing you may want to take the long road. You will need to core, peel and cut up apples prior to putting them in the crock pot.
2. Add cinnamon (I like a lot so I use 1 tablespoon) and sugar/Splenda (I like only a little so I use about 1/4 cup or less). Mix well so the apples are coated. Some like to add cinnamon toward the end of the cook time because they feel the cinnamon loses it's potency. I'll let you decide.
3. Add about 1/4 cup of water or apple juice.
4. Turn crock pot to low and cook for anywhere between 5-8 hours depending on how big or small you cut up your apples. Check their doneness every so often just to be safe.
5. When sauce is ready to your liking, mash with a spoon or potato smasher (only if you peeled and cored apples first) to get a chunky consistency. Use an emulsion blender (only with peeled and cored apples) for a smooth consistency or a food mill. If using a food mill just run the sauce through the food mill while it sits on top of  a bowl to catch the sauce. Get rid of the peels and seeds every so often.
6. Place applesauce into containers of choice and freeze. Also can be processed in a hot water bath. Process 15 minutes for pints and 20 minutes for quarts. Make sure jars have sealed. Any unsealed jars need to be refrigerated. Enjoy!

I make this applesauce every year. Have fun with it. Try fun additions like maple syrup or other spices.

Nana's Apple Cake (Thanks Copykat Recipes and a big shout out to Stephanie!)

Go get it:

1/2 cup shortening

2 cups sugar

2 eggs

2 tsp vanilla

2 cups flour

1 tsp. baking soda

1 tsp. baking powder

1 tsp. salt

1 tsp. cinnamon

1 tsp. nutmeg or mace

1 tsp. ginger

6 cups peeled, diced tart apples

Go make it:

Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs and vanilla. Combine dry ingredients and add to mixture. Stir in apples. Spoon into greased 11 x 13 pan. Bake at 350 for 45-50 minutes or until the toothpick comes out clean. Cook time may vary so really check the doneness before removing from oven. Recipe may be cut in half and cooked in an 8x8 pan. This is amazing all by itself, but even better served warm with some vanilla bean ice cream.

I would love to hear any of your go to recipes for apples. I love apple anything and everything. It really is Fall when I bust out the apple recipes. I might as well enjoy it.

My Piggly Wiggly run. 17 items for $4.93!

I just had to go to the Pumpkinfest! Early in the morning we bought 10 pumpkins. Yes, 10. They were all gone when we went back in late afternoon for some other deals. You can do something similar too. Read on.

10 boxes of Totino's Pizza Rolls (15 count) $0.99 each. These qualified for the buy 10 General Mills items and receive and instant $5 off. So it quickly went from $9.90 to $4.90. I then used two $1/2 coupons from the Totinos website and I had three $0.50/2 coupons from the Totinos website, but found a better coupon right next to the pizza rolls! It was a blinkie for $0.55/2. Hey, $0.15 is $0.15! So I held onto my other coupons and used these instead. This brought my total down to $1.25. The hubbs loves instant freezer food as much as I love to recycle. ;)

I also picked up some random items. One loaf of Piggly Wiggly bread for $1. One bag of carrots (1 lb.) for $0.79. Crab Classic Crab for FREE using a $1/1 coupon from the Crab Classic website. Three packs of Ramen noodles on sale for $0.20 each. Curry powder for $1.29. Do you smell a recipe coming on? I also used one reusable bag that didn't take off $0.05 LOL. I tried. Cashier Brandon did not. That's ok, he was very friendly.

I purchased 17 items and spent $4.93. Not bad. Not bad. If you see my husband tell my husband it won't hurt him to eat more fruit and vegetables. We'll work on the Dirty Dozen at a later time. Your turn to go grab some savings!

Piggly Wiggly deals 9/22 - 9/28. Midwest locations.

These prices apply to Piggly Wiggly stores in the Midwest. See if your store is included here. Don't forget to print out your Online Exclusive Coupons. This week's coupons (for my area) are for 10 or 12 count Food Club Thirst Splashers or Sugar Free Drink Mix or 200 count Valu Time Napkins. You can use these coupons when you spend $10. Since these are Pig coupons you can stack it with mfr. coupon if applicable. I am also really liking that Piggly Wiggly is participating in the EZ Pic discount program. It's like eco-friendly coupons. No need to clip. No card to load them onto. If you buy the qualifying amount of a product the sale price just rings up at the register. I will try to note when an item is an EZ Pic product. I have not been doing so in the past. My Piggly Wiggly (Little Chute) accepts IP (Internet Print) coupons up to $2.50 $2.00. They no longer accept any IP coupons that have the word FREE in the title. No BOGO (buy one get one) or just plain FREE coupons. None. Zero. Zilch. Also no % off. These are new rules. Yours may vary.

The Rattles review and giveaway.

Do the giveaway dance! I was given the opportunity to review the new album, Rattle On by The Rattles. The Rattles are a family friendly quartet of furry animals that sing fun classic rock type songs. The Rattles consist of Gus, Kitty, Hal and Sal who have been friends forever. Don't they sound like someone you'd want you family listening to? I think so.

Here's a fun song called Rattle On to get you acquainted:

I was very excited to listen to this album because I heard that it wasn't cheesy, nursery rhymey songs that you can't wait to turn off. I will admit I was that mom that didn't play the CDs that were too over the top mushy gushy. I just couldn't take too much of it. Especially not a whole CD worth. Sure, they are great for bed time, but anything past that.....

My take on The Rattles is that it's very kid friendly. It was easy listening for me and my kids. My toddler loves all kinds of music and this was no exception. Now my tween on the other hand wasn't so thrilled. Don't feel bad Rattles, she only lives for Justin Bieber. I totally felt a Beatles Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band vibe on Rattle On. That was fun. On Wavy Lane I was thinking more on the lines of Simon and Garfunkel. And for R-A-T-T-L-E-S I was totally feeling Bay City Rollers. Don't laugh if I'm the only one who thinks this. Listen to these songs here

You can find loads and loads of fun stuff like pictures, fan club, groovy games and much more on their website here. Do you tweet? If so follow The Rattles here! They are also on Facebook.

Buy it:

How does your garden grow? Part 26: Ready to winter over your flowers?

More like how does your garden stop growing? LOL. My Geraniums are definitely on their way out. I haven't had the heart to put them in the garage and start their ugly looking process toward next year's pretty flowers. Today I finnally got the courage. My rule is that I cannot put up my fall decor much less the Halloweeny stuff until my flowers go inside. What? Don't red and pink Geraniums go with orange pumpkins?

Geraniums are pretty hardy so they could handle a light frost, but not most other flowers. Like my Begonia should come in very soon, but it is still outside because it is so pretty. Well, that and it's yellow and orange. :) Remember this little guy? He was the tiny, hardly noticeable pot in this picture on my post about wintering over your flowers. Actually, it's only half of the plant. One of my tubers broke right after it established good new growth. So this is really only one of two Begonias.

First, you should place your pots in the basement or garage before a frost. Then remove the excess dead stuff. After about a week put them down your basement (if you had them in the garage) in large enough garbage bags. Keep them right in their pots. Read more here. This saves lots of money each year. Try it out.

Top 10 plants that purify the air you breathe.

We all know that our houses become stuffy when closed up for long periods of time. I hate to say it, but stuffy isn't the half of it. There are many pollutants floating around in the air we breathe every day.

Newer constructed homes are tightly sealed and this assures that we don't let cold/hot air in or out. This is great for efficiency, but not for our health. There have been studies showing that quite a few tropical plants and some typical houseplants have great capabilities at removing these toxins.  NASA is the most well known study that people cite. NASA recommends that you put one plant per 100 square feet in your home. So load up!

Here are the top 10 most air purifying plants:

  1. Areca Palm - Not only the highest ranking at removing toxins it also is great at keeping humidity in the air.
  2. Lady Palm - Almost tied with the Areca Palm, but not as good at removing Formaldehyde. Your best bet is to have many types of plants in your home.
  3. Bamboo Palm - An all around great air purifier. This plant will get big.
  4. Rubber Plant - Great at removing all the bad stuff in your air along with adding moisture. As the plant grows and grows it just keeps getting better at removing the toxins. This plant will get pretty big too.
  5. Dracaena (Janet Craig) - Best spot is in newly carpeted rooms that have loads of toxins.
  6. English Ivy - Allergies be gone with this houseplant. Mold in the air is quickly removed with these.
  7. Date Palm Tree - Not as great as it's three siblings (see 1, 2 and 3), but don't pass on these guys just yet. If added to your home with other plants listed you will notice big results.
  8. Ficus Alii -  Easy to care for and great at purifying the air. If you have an allergy to latex wear gloves when handling.
  9. Boston Fern - The best plant at removing Formaldehyde.
  10. Peace Lily - Another easy to grow plant. A great air purifier too.
Noteworthy plants that didn't make it to the Top 10 are:

Aloe Vera - Not only known for it's medicinal properties, but does a decent job of removing Formaldehyde from the air.
Spider Plants - The more the merrier. Amazing at removing carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide from the air. Put these all over your house.
Chrysanthemums - Removes VOC Benzene from the air.
Philodendron (Heart Leaf) - Awesome at removing Formaldehyde from the air.
Snake Plant (Mother in Law Tongue) - Amazing at removing toxins from the air and great hearty growers.

Just remember to read up on the type of plants you have so you know how to care for them and what to watch out for (e.g Ficus for latex allergies). Who needs an air purifier with expensive filters?!

Piggly Wiggly deals 9/15 - 9/21. Midwest locations.

These prices apply to Piggly Wiggly stores in the Midwest. See if your store is included here. Don't forget to print out your Online Exclusive Coupons. This week's coupon (for my area) is for a FREE 16 oz. bottle of Food Club Salad Dressing. Excludes mayonnaise varieties. You can use this coupon when you spend $10. Since this is a Pig coupon you can stack it with mfr. coupon if applicable.
