Veggie Trader: classifieds for your produce, garden supplies and more!

Swap your homegrown produce on Veggie Trader
Is it that time already?! I'm already getting spring fever and it's nowhere in sight. I have the bug to start planting some seeds and wondered if there were any available on Veggie Trader. It is an awesome website that I want to share with you. Veggie Trader started with a lone lemon tree that was rarely picked. This lemon tree sparked the idea of saving neighborhood produce from going to waste. As their site says: bringing good food and good people together. It's so much more! Read on to learn more.

Using the website is so easy and it's FREE! The first step is to join here. This is so you can trade, sell or buy what you need. Veggie Trader will not sell your information. After you join you can start searching or make your own post. There are a few rules regarding taxes, licenses, prohibited items and quarantine zones. If you have any questions visit their FAQ page.

Veggie Trade is fairly new and I wish more people knew about it. I would love to trade my excess homegrown produce in the summer. There are buttons and banners you can add to your blog, website, or social networking site. You can also print off flyers. Let's get the word out there.

Pick N Save deals 1/17 - 1/23

I did pretty good at Double Daze. I managed to spend $1.18. I did two transactions. It's kind of a goofy scenerio as I had to return a big box of diapers which gave me a $20.99 store gift card. I'm counting this as free because the diapers were a gift. I noticed that Pampers jumbo packs were on sale for $8.99 and I had two coupons so it seemed a better choice to get the two smaller packs. I got both for $14.48. $0.23 a diaper isn't amazing, but not bad. I had a little fiasco with my coupons. Yikes! I forgot to give the checker one of my $1 coupons for the V8 Fusion to double so I took it to the service desk and they gave me the dollar, but didn't get it doubled. At least a different coupon doubled in it's place. And it made me 2 cents. And it allowed me to get free Butternut bread. And the checker didn't give me the milk Catalina right away so I had to bring that up to the service desk also. I'm sure that lady thought I was a little loopy. Oh well. Here's the best of my buys:
  • 2 pints of International Delight creamer-MONEY MAKER $0.10 on each.
  • 3 Hamburger Helper $0.58/each.
  • FREE gallon of Kemps Vitamin A&D milk.
  • FREE Yoplait Frozen Smoothie.
  • 1 loaf of Butternut 100% Whole Wheat Bread MONEY MAKER $0.02.
  • Pillsbury All Purpose Flour $0.98 down from $2.69. Thanks Festival Foods!
  • Did the buy 6 boxes of GM cereal and get FREE milk. I used 5 coupons and that took off $8 ($20.34 - automatic $10 - $8 = $2.34 for 6 boxes and gallon of milk. :) Would have been $1.34, but checker jumbled my coupons so one didn't get doubled only took off $1. Boo! Still a great deal. That averaged $0.39/box. And FREE milk.
The family was happy that I stocked up on cereals they liked instead of plain Cheerios for my baby. I can't resist a bowl of Lucky Charms once in a while. :) Don't forget to use stackable coupons (e.g those from the Sunday Paper- Festival Foods). That's how I managed to make $ on the loaf of bread and my flour was so cheap. And one last thought. Don't forget that I had a gift card that had $20.99 on it to replace the diapers, but only used $14.48 so that left $5.52 to use as I pleased. And I'm spent. Did you get any great deals?

The Frugal Map

One of the reasons that I started this blog was because I was having a hard time locating a decent frugal blog that was close enough to my zipcode. So what a wonderful idea Briana had over at Bargain Briana. She created a match up of frugal blogs by state. You can even submit your blog. And another great function is being able to embed the Frugal Map onto your blog. I'm going to do that right now! Thanks Money Saving Mom.

Text HAITI to help Red Cross relief efforts.

We have all heard about the horrific earthquake that has taken place in Haiti. What do we do? What can we do? It's the worst feeling: helplessness. What can we possibly do so many thousands of miles away from Haiti? If you are spiritual you can pray. It's free. :) You can also get in contact with the many humanitarian organizations eager to help. The American Red Cross is one good example. The Red Cross is asking that even though you may be making an attempt to travel to Haiti that the best and easiest way to help is to make a donation. I am singling out the texting because I never knew about this option before the earthquake in Haiti. You can text HAITI to 90999. This will add an amount of $10 to your cell phone bill. Some carries are still charging standard text messaging rates, but some are dropping the charge for this particular situation. Sprint, AT&T and Verizon were listed as not charging as of Thursday.

Frugal Options: Suave Professionals Shampoo.

I am always one for trying new products, especially if this product will save me money. In our household we have been using the Suave hair care line for quite some time. It's not the only line we use, but for the most part let’s just say that Suave spends a lot of time in our bathroom. I recently purchased the Radiant Brunette (pictured above right) on clearance at Pick N Save for $0.99 and had a coupon on top of that so it was almost free. You can usually find the Professionals line costing you roughly $1.99 and up depending on the sale running. This pricing is for the 14.5 oz. I have tried cheaper brands than Suave and really think that there is no comparison. Suave gets my vote. You can also get a pretty darn good deal all of the time at Alice.com. Haven't heard of Alice.com? Read more here to get acquainted. Suave also puts a lot of coupons in the Sunday paper inserts so keep your eyes peeled. Have you tried Suave? What do you think? Remember, lather rinse repeat! Well, actually to save money I wouldn't recommend it unless you dirrrty. Ha ha.

Doubling your coupons at Pick N Save (Rainbow Foods/Copps)

My new favorite thing in the whole world is Double Daze at Pick N Save. Just ask my husband! The lovely Jessica over at Mom For Him has been my coach through and through. I used to be the timid you want me to do more than one transaction?! kind of gal. Now I grab that divider bar with gusto. Ha ha. Jessica has turned me into a pro....in my mind. I know she has been doing this a lot longer than I have, but it is almost a rush when you know that you are saving over 50% of what you used to go in there spending. I almost feel like I am cheating the system. I feel a tinge of guilt when the person behind me in line is watching my total go down down down. I can't ever tell if they are staring because they are annoyed that I have a handful of coupons and questions for the checker or if they are in disbelief that I have spent so little on so many groceries. I used to think that $30 would get me three bags of groceries. Now it fills my trunk. :) Go me. That's right. I just gave myself a pat on the back. You will too!

How does this whole Double Daze work? Let me share what I know with you:
  • Double Daze is only on Wednesdays. Every week.
  • You may double up to 5 eligible coupons in one transaction when you spend $25. This is after you have scanned your card, but before coupons (this is how you get your total way below $25 ultimately).
  •  You may double any mfr (manufacturer) coupons up to $1. This includes IP (internet printable) coupons.
  • You may not use IP coupons that say Free. Only 'real' paper coupons that say Free are allowed.
  • A store coupon can be redeemed with a mfr coupon for the same item. This is called stacking.
  • You cannot double BOGO (buy one get one free) or 'try me for free' coupons.
  • The first 5 coupons double. Plan ahead and put your highest value coupons on top of your stack. The checker isn't going to do any work for you and assume which coupons you want doubled.
  • Pick N Save's formal policy for doubling coupons that say 'do not double' is to not double them. If you are lucky your store will stray from this rule. So you should call ahead and ask the manager about your store's policy.
More tips: Rumor has it that reusable bags will get you .05 each. I haven't done this yet. I will keep you posted. Do multiple transactions to be able to double 5 more coupons per transaction. Bring a calculator with you just in case. Look for peelies (coupons peeled off of products). Have your trip all mapped out ahead of time so you know exactly what you need and don't have to sit and add up things as you go. This will reduce the stress factor! Pick N Save accepts Festival Foods coupons. Only the ones cut from the newspaper, though so be careful. Here's to saving!

Gardens Alive! Catalog - Receive $25 Off $25 Order.

I know around NEW it's a little early to be thinking gardening, but my organic seedlings will be finding their way through the dirt sooner than later. Gardens Alive! is a great company trying to keep gardening natural. From keeping pests at bay to wonderful heirloom tomatoes. Go pay them a visit. Sign up here and they should send you a coupon code for $25 off to be used on a $25 order when you sign up for their catalog. The best part is that it is a coupon code that can count toward shipping charges too. I sure hope that my organic endeavors go further than they did last year. I didn't fare so well. I did everything right to take care of my seedlings and then something comes along and eats most of my tender little guys before they even saw it coming. Now if I can just keep the deer away this year. Here's to a better season!

Alice.com

What is Alice? Alice.com is a site that offers every household item you could possibly need without having to step foot outside. At least not until it arrives. If that doesn't want to make you rush on over there--it gets better. They will keep track of what you may be running low on and find you great coupons and deals! Oh and please don't stop breathing, but they also throw in free shipping. You do have to have 6 items in your cart in order to get your order placed. How do you sign up you ask? Easy peasy. You can use my referral link here and we both get a bonus. What type of bonus? You get a $10 credit to your Alice account once you spend $50 and I can receive up to 3% of your sales for one year. Pretty cool I think. So what are you waiting for? :)

Free Book - Read It Forward

I am all about reusing and what's not more reusable than a book?! I always pass my books on and love getting them passed on to me. There are three titles to pick from and I had a hard time deciding. You can read excerpts from each to help you decide. I sent for my free copy yesterday. You should act fast as this is a pretty cool offer that may not last long. Let me know if you get one sent to you and maybe we can swap when we are finished. Also, let me know what you thought of your book. I can't wait to read mine! Give a big thank you to My Milwaukee Mommy for this wonderful offer!

*I wanted to let you know that I am trying something a little different with this post. Instead of the deal link being in my text, it is the title. Just in case you were thinking I was trying to make you work for this one. ;) Let me know if you think this is better than before or just plain ridiculous. I can take it.

Once Upon A Child Event

Once Upon A Child is having a Grab Bag Event Saturday, January 30. It is being held at the Appleton and Green Bay stores only. You can put as many items* that you can fit into a bag for $10. 9am-8pm. I am assuming it is a bag supplied by the store, but if I find out I will keep you posted.

I am a huge fan of this store. Kids grow so fast and they have quality products for not a lot of damage to your wallet. They carry clothing in sizes newborn through children's 18. They also carry a wide variety of gently used baby gear and toys. The store is open Monday-Sunday. See you there!

*clearance items only.

Pick N Save deals 1/3 through 1/9.

I went to Pick N Save on Wednesday for Double Daze. I spent $25.87 and saved $29.07. I bought 30 items. I always think I can do better, but here's the best of what I got.
  • Lean Cuisine Meals 50% off. As low as $1.19-1.62.
  • Lean Pockets $1.33 each.
  • Dannon Fruit on the Bottom Yogurt $0.20 each.
  • Coffee-mate Creamer 16 oz. $0.13 each.
  • Roundys Organic Whole Milk FREE

The rest was just normal sale items. Lately there has been amazing cereal deals, but not so much this week. I make a point to only buy it if I can get it below a dollar a box. I think I have enough Cheerios for a while, though. December was a great month for stocking up. PNS is running a deal that I took advantage of. When you buy $15 worth of qualifying Nestle products you receive a coupon for a free Lean Cuisine Entree (up to $3.75) to be used for a future purchase. This deal runs 1/3-1/13. I bought 7 Lean Cuisine Entrees and 3 Lean Pockets totaling $14.01. Did you get any great deals that I missed?

And a big thanks to Kathy over at $30 Weekly Grocery Challenge.

Going Green Volume I.

I have tried very hard over the last couple of years to really go green. I want to let you know that this doesn't mean you need to go spend tons of money on products you see on TV or see on the shelf at your favorite stores. There are plenty of these items in your house right now. My favorite item of choice is white vinegar. It's not just for coloring eggs ladies and gentlemen.

Vinegar vinegar vinegar! Vinegar works in almost any situation. 1.) Soap Scum: Heat it up and put it into a spray bottle. Spray it on your soap scum. Let sit a minute or two and scrub with a scrub brush. This worked better for me than ANY store product yet. And I have hard water. Works best after a hot shower. 2.) Mineral Deposits: Get a rag heavily soaked in vinegar and wrap it around your shower head/faucets. Use a rubber band to help keep it on if you want. Let it sit as long as you can stand and all of the mineral deposits should be gone or at least pliable and easily removed. 3.) Use vinegar in place of rinse aid in your dishwasher. 4.) Glass cleaner: Use vinegar in place of your normal glass cleaner. The first time you do this you may notice streaking. If this happens you may need to get rid of the waxy build up that commercial glass cleaners have left behind. To do so mix together 1/2 cup white vinegar, 2 cups water and 1/2 teaspoon dish soap. Shake. Spray onto mirror and let sit a moment. Wipe clean. After this initial treatment you may proceed with plain vinegar on a daily basis. 5.) Weed Killer: Pickling vinegar (9% acidic concentration or more) sprayed onto mature weeds will kill them. A lower acidity vinegar will work on tender, young weeds. This technique works best on sunny days with no rain in the forecast.

This just barely scratches the surface of all of the wonderful uses for vinegar. Check back soon for more ways to go green the easy way.

The New Year.

Have a safe and enjoyable New Year. Here's to family, health, giving, keeping your resolutions, and being kind to everyone and our planet. Do you make resolutions? Do you keep them? What are your plans for the future? I am pretty sure mine include expanding my family and always trying to better myself. Those are not really resolutions, but that's as close as I get. Cheers!
